Shayla Bennett, 16, died from injuries sustained from a traffic accident
Just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012, a horrendous accident took the life of Wortham teenager Shayla Bennett. The seventeen-year-old would have been entering her Junior year at Wortham High School in less than a month.
According to Department of Public Safety Trooper, Lewis Sullivan, Ms. Bennett was southbound on FM 80, near CR 937, when she failed to negotiate a left hand curve, drifted off to the right side of the roadway, over-corrected and lost control of her 2001 Ford pick-up.
The vehicle turned over and burst into flames.
Freestone County Justice of the Peace Pct 2, Debra Hamilton, pronounced Ms. Bennett dead at the scene.
Wortham Mayor, Kelly Craig, states that in a town as small as Wortham, everybody knows everybody. The loss of this teen, whose mother is employed at the school, is being felt by everyone.
Mayor Craig says that the town stands ready to assist in any way they can.
"Our hearts go out to the family. Please pray for them as they go through this terrible, terrible thing," Craig said.
