Mayor Frank E. Addy, Jr, 58, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head
NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC - Saluda Mayor Frank E. Addy, Jr. has committed suicide, according to Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton. Newton said Addy's body was discovered around 10:30 a.m. Sunday inside a family residence on Lake Greenwood in the Lakeshore subdivision near Chappells.
A Sheriff's Department incident report indicates Addy's son received a text message early Sunday morning that caused him to be concerned. Addy's son and brother went to the home to check on the mayor's well-being and discovered the body. According to the coroner, Addy died from a single gunshot wound to the head. He was found in the living room sitting in a chair, Newton said.
The 58-year-old had been the subject of a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigation after a town resident asked for the agency to look into Addy's mileage reimbursements. The Greenwood Index-Journal reported in February Addy claimed nearly $27,000 in travel reimbursements in 2012. That was more than triple what he spent on travel the year before.
Addy told the newspaper that the trips were to drum up economic development for the town. He said his travel had more than paid for itself with millions of dollars of new business. Saluda reimbursed Addy 55 cents a mile for his travel, which meant he reported driving more than 48,000 miles last year.

Addy claimed $8,800 for travel in 2011 and $2,300 in 2010. "We have been conducting a preliminary review into allegations involving Mr. Addy," said SLED spokesperson Thom Berry Monday. "That preliminary investigative review is still underway at this time."
SLED is currently in the process of closing the case against Addy. Agency officials couldn't say whether there were any other suspected parties involved in the investigation. Addy had been mayor of the town of approximately 3,500 since 2006.
According to the Index-Journal, he had been a delivery driver for the publication for years. With Addy's death, the town is without an elected mayor. Councilwoman Anissa Turner is the mayor pro-temp and will serve as acting mayor while the town sorts out what to do.
The death investigation is being conducted by the Newberry County Sheriff's Department and the Newberry County Coroner's Office.
SALUDA, S.C. –The mayor of Saluda, S.C. killed himself the same day that a local newspaper published a report questioning mileage reimbursements he received from the town, WIS-TV reports.
According to the report, Mayor Frank E. Addy, Jr. was found dead on Sunday morning from a single gunshot wound to the head, the same day as The Index-Journal of Greenwood published a story stating he received more than $38,000 in mileage reimbursements, which is more than triple what he spent on travel in year past. Addy claimed $8,800 for travel in 2011 and $2,300 in 2010 according to WIS-TV.
Addy told the newspaper that the trips were to “drum up” economic development for the town, saying his travel had more than paid for itself with millions of dollars of new business. However, several companies Addy claimed mileage to visit, had no record of meeting with him.
